USA road trip part 7
25 June
Arrived Monterey around 5pm, nice hotel with balcony although it overlooked car park, but there was a bank with trees etc opposite and lots of small moths of some kind swarming round trees. Saw a couple of Jays eating the moths :)
Drove out to Fisherman's Wharf. Wasn't expecting much from this as it got bad reports in our guide books, but it was very pleasant. Lots of shops selling souvenirs, t-shirts and food. We tried to book a half hour glass bottom boat trip but we were the only ones and they refunded our money as there weren't enough people to run the trip. Walked round the boardwalk area, saw the sea lions and pelicans and took photos. Went for a drink and ended up having dinner there, nice seafood place towards the end of the old boardwalk. Kirsty had lobster surf & turf, M had rock shrimp pasta & I had lobster sandwich. Vvery nice food but underwhelmed by lobster sandwich ;) K noticed a sea otter in the harbour but not easy to see or take photos through restaurant window. Walked up from the boardwalk of main wharf towards Cannery Row - spotted sea otters in harbour and followed a mother and cub feeding as we went up along the promenade. K paddled in the Pacific but a wave washed over her flip flops on the beach - quite funny!
Walked further up to Cannery Row & I sat on seat with bags while M & K went on beach to take photos of otters and scenery. M went up to Cannery Row itself but apart from some signs saying what it was and mentioning John Steinbeck, it was just a lot of buildings round a street.
Sat looking at sunset and counted 6 sea otters round the bay and harbour. A good evening and we wish we'd stayed here another night.
